To the average Englishman of today Captain Cook is little more than a name. But he is at least that, and, if we except Christopher Columbus and the latest newspaper-hero, there is hardly any other explorer of whom as much can confidently be said.

The US Treasury Department will no longer label China a currency manipulator citing improvements in the nation's currency practices.
That’s one of the positions outlined in a semiannual report on the foreign-exchange policies of major trading partners.
It says China will no longer be designated a currency manipulator at this time.
The report says China has made enforceable commitments to refrain from competitive devaluation.
That comes as part of an agreement for a Phase One trade deal, to be signed this week.
Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin says the deal will lead to greater economic growth, and opportunities for American workers and businesses
The Trump administration has said it will lower some tariffs on Chinese imports after the agreement is signed.
But the Treasury Department says it will keep China on its watch list for currency practices. There are nine other countries on the list, including Germany and Japan.
US officials designated China a currency manipulator in August, for the first time in 25 years. They said the country had devalued its currency to gain an unfair trade advantage.

If you want to enter the University of Tokyo, you have to study really really hard. But is the entrance exam for testing English skills extremely difficult?
The video below shows that a British girl who took the test made no mistakes on it. It seems that it’s not hard for her to understand the passages.
The students who gets into the Japan's top university are thought to be the smartest in the country. But are all of them fluent in English and able to speak the language like native speakers?
I hear a new strain of coronavirus is spreading in China. I fear that transmission of the virus continues to spread in China though China's National Health Commission says it is preventable and controllable.
An outbreak of a new strain of coronavirus appears to be spreading in China. The number of confirmed cases have tripled to more than 200. Health officials say three people have died and nine are in critical condition. https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20200120_80/
I watched a video and thought it might be helpful to someone who is not confident of their English communication.
Yukiko Nakamoto is a non-native English speaker. She couldn’t speak and write English, but now she can communicate in English smoothly. Why?
When she became a patent translator in 2000 and started writing on technical stuff like inventions on LED lamps or something else, she came to realize that any advanced or complicated English is not necessary. She thought it’s simple and plain English that she needed to describe difficult things.
Then she studied very hard and passed a difficult test. She was awarded by the Ministry of Education, Culture , Sports, Science and Technology and became a chief instructor at the Japan Society of Technical Communication. She published two books and founded a company. Using simple English motivated her and has changed her life.

There are a wide variety of translations of literary works of all ages and countries. Reading even a single line of a famous work in the original language will give you a different impression from reading the translation.
Write at least 100 words of English about the following topic. (一橋大) Who is the person you admire most (living or dead)?
The person I admire most is Malala Yousafzai. She is a Pakistani activist defending the right to education for women and the youngest Nobel Prize laureate.
She was born in Pakistan and began to known at the age of 13 thanks to a BBC diary. She wrote about her life under the Taliban, which embrace Islamic religious extremism.
In October 2012, returning home from school, she was shot by a masked gunman. It was 10 days later that she woke up in a hospital in Biringham, England The operation was a success and she was discharged three months later.
She could live a quiet life but she decided to continue her fight for every girl who can’t go to school and established Malala Fund. She became a prominent activist for the right to education.
She is a very brave woman who never gave up her belief and was determined to continue to fight for girls’ education after she was shot. This is the reason why I admire her most.
Some people don’t think for themselves when they read books. They only try to understand what an author says. It’s true reading books is a good habit, but it will be more effective if you think for yourself.
Critical thinking is the ability to analyze information objectively and make a better judgement. Examining a text carefully is part of it.
You may get screwed over if you don’t think a text critically. What do you do when you receive an email that promises you millions? What is your approach to this? If you get such an email, you have to think critically. You have to doubt that it tells the truth.
A book may also include false information or a writer may have a bias. So you have to gather useful and reliable information and judge it for yourself if you are not sure that they are sound on a topic. That’s because critical thinking prevent us from believing in it without giving consideration to it
For the above reason, you should not read books passively. You should explore other points of view and evaluate them and think critically. Then you can make a more informed judgement. Critical thinking has the power to make your reading better.
41 people have been killed by the Wuhan coronavirus. In Japan Health authorities have confirmed the country’s 3rd case of it after Japanese Foreign Ministry said it would raise the infectious disease warning for China’s Hubei Province to the second-highest level. The virus can spread widely in this country, so the Japanese government must make a good decision.
Some experts say the virus may not be as deadly as other types of coronavirus such as SARS. But, according to a Hong Kong infectious disease expert, this new virus may be more infectious than SARS. He says we have seen patients who have a pneumonia, but has no symptom of fever or cough, so it is not easy to recognize the cases of novel coronavirus infection and control the outbreak.
What we know for sure is that there is evidence of respiratory transmission of the virus from patient to patient. The second patient in the US traveled to Wuhan in late December and returned to the US on January 13. Three cases confirmed in Japan have connection to Wuhan. The situation will become worse if we have started to have cases that has no connection to Wuhan.
Much is still unknown about this virus. But scientists say they have confirmed that the pneumonia-like disease was zoonotic or transmitted from an animal. Although Chinese scientists say snakes may be the source of it, they are still investigating exactly what creature is the source of the novel coronavirus.
It is true that we need to be mindful of condemning cultural practices but there will be a great deal room for improvement about the problematic nature of “wet markets” in Wuhan. It is said that a mixture of bodily fluids from live, wild creatures ends up mixing with blood from butchered animals and provide ideal opportunities for viruses and bacteria to thrive.
The WHO says that it’s still too early to declare this is a global crisis, but the coronavirus death toll has been rising in China and the virus has been spreading globally. So Japan must treat it seriously and make a good decision at this time to control the spread of the virus, otherwise it is possible that Tokyo or other cities would become Wuhan.
We begin with the coronavirus outbreak in China where officials now say the death toll has risen to 132. The number of confirmed infections in the country has risen to nearly 6,000, with over a thousand people in serious condition. NHK WORLD https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/news/20200129_41/

There is no sign that the outbreak is abating. When will the situation return to normal?
The genome sequence of 2019-nCoV was made public in early January and it has led to diagnostic tests for the virus. But we don’t have no vaccine for the coronavirus.
Virologists worldwide are sharing live samples and are in the process of developing a vaccine. But according to health 24, it takes three months to develop a vaccine that is approved for clinical use.
So the situation will not change for the better soon.

Chinese authorities say the number of confirmed cases of new coronavirus in mainland China has topped 40,000. Health officials in China say 3,062 more people were found to be infected on Sunday, bringing the total number of patients to 40,171. The death toll has risen by 97 to 908. A large number of the reported fatalities occurred in Hubei Province.
Chinese authorities say the number of confirmed cases of new coronavirus in mainland China has topped 40,000. これは主節がChinese authorities say、従属節がthe number of confirmed cases of new coronavirus in mainland China has topped 40,000.
the number of confirmed cases of new coronavirus in mainland China has topped 40,000は 長いんで、何が主語で何が述語かわかりにくいですが、どうすか? で、主語はthe number of confirmed cases of new coronavirus in mainland Chinaで、has toppedが述語です。
Chinese authorities say the number of confirmed cases of new coronavirus in mainland China has topped 40,000.
the number of confirmed cases of new coronavirus in mainland Chinaをこまかくみてい きましょう。 of confirmed cases of new coronaviruのconfirmedは確認されたって意味で、casesにか かっています。 で、cases of new coronavirusで新型コロナに感 染した人なので、of confirmed cases of new coronavirusで「新型コロナの感染が確認され たひとの」って意味でしょうね。
3,062 more people were found to be infected on Sunday と言っているということ ですが、to be infectedは不定詞の副詞用法で、were foundにかかっていると思いますが、 用法はわかりにくいですね。
The death toll has risen by 97 to 908. A large number of the reported fatalities occurred in Hubei Province.
The death toll has risen to 83.
of the reported fatalitiesは形容詞句でa large numberにかかっています。

3,062 more people were found to be infected on Sunday ごちゃごちゃかいたけど S(中国句当局が)found 3,062 more people to be infected on Sunday (SVO to be C 構文) を受動文にしたものだとおもう
Researchers in Guangzhou, China, have suggested that pangolins — long-snouted, ant-eating mammals often used in traditional Chinese medicine — are the probable animal source of the coronavirus outbreak that has infected more than 30,000 people and is wreaking havoc worldwide.
主語はResearchers 述語はhave suggested pangolinsは従属節の主語 従属節の述語はare that has infected more than 30,000 people and is wreaking havoc worldwide のthatは関係代名詞主格で先行詞はたぶんthe coronavirus outbreak。

F: First of all…ah.. I just ah… book fan and I(’m) pretty much impressed by your book. And ju..just let’s go back to individual memories. People often say “this is my very beautiful memory, very vivid memory in my childhood, and I think it’s manipulated ones, and my sentimental memory, my beautiful childhood memory is actually my pet memories. It’s..I recall repeatedly and tame very care and unconsciousnessly (unconsciouslyの間違い) modified to make it more beautiful. And that’s a manipulation and I see similar interesting stories and episode in your book.
K: Yes, so I thin…I think..um.particularly childhood memories..so..memories that…um..nostalgic memories I find very interesting. Um..in fact, nostalgia I find a very interesting emoion. Thank you very much. It’s a great pleasure to be with you here in Japan again. Ah..this is my third visit to Japan and I always enjoy coming back to Japan for many reasons. Not least of which is that Japan is the only country in the world, for I feel like a tall man. But fundamentally the reasons for the interest in Japan are very different, It is because Japan ah..is…at one and the same time so different from my own country and yet other respects so much alike and it is fascinating to see how the same basic underlying forces work themselves out in a society that is so different in so many respects.

Individualism is one of the basic tenets of democracy, and the belief that individuals take priority over the aggregate they make up together―family, community, society, nation― has found its way into various codes of conduct at different levels of human relationships. People try to stand out as individuals and be ‘uniquely’ different from others. American TV programmes encourage you to ‘be yourself’. But a casual attempt to be different from other people quite often ends up being just an eccentricity. We should always be mindful that we can only meaningfully behave ‘like ourselves’ within the whole system of human society, and therefore that we need to make strenuous efforts to learn that system in the first.
